As we live in the “selfie era”, and we all want to achieve perfect, slim, bodies, free of any fat, the interest in non-surgical treatments for body contouring has experienced an increased interest. There are many energy-based devices to reduce the amount of body fat by different means, but nothing compares to fat dissolving injectables in terms of efficacy, results and safety.

But first, an important disclaimer: fat dissolving injections are NOT a weight loss treatment. They are intended to reduce and eliminate the stubborn fat pockets and areas present in our body despite doing regular exercise and/or keeping good dietary habits. If you want to lose weight, you should go first to a professional nutritionist that will advise you and teach you how to eat better (not necessarily a standard, boring diet). A personal trainer who teaches you how to implement exercise into your regular routine is also strongly recommended. Fat dissolving injections are fabulous motivators, though, when you have achieved some weight loss.

THE INITIAL CONSULTATION

Your practitioner will ask you for any relevant medical history and about any previous treatments and your healthy habits. Then a full assessment of the fatty area to be treated will be made, considering not just the fat tissue, but also other issues such as loose skin, water retention and presence of other skin conditions at the fat pocket area.

Your practitioner will explain to you the treatment, pros and cons, and the expected number of sessions needed to achieve the desired results. This is the time when you will be able to discuss with your practitioner your expectations, your concerns and questions, so make sure that you discuss everything, including their qualifications, insurance and finances.

THE PROCEDURE

The procedure is virtually pain free. And you will not need any anaesthetic cream or ointment prior to the procedure. Some products, such Aqualyx, are mixed with anaesthetic to minimise any possible discomfort.

After photos of yourself and the treated area are taken, your practitioner will assess again the area and will mark it accordingly, including the injection points.Depending on the product to be used, technique may differ:

• For Aqualyx you will feel just 2 or 3 pricks as all the procedure is entirely done using 2 injection points. As the skin is the only possible source of pain, this makes the procedure very comfortable for the patient.
• For other brands, such as Pluryal BodyContour, multiple injection sites will be used, but the nature of the solution injected will numb the area, making the procedure virtually pain free.
• Most patients will experience a “stinging” sensation whilst the product is delivered, but this is gone after a few minutes, and it is not, by any means, uncomfortable.

The procedure is a quick one, and it will not take more than 15 minutes total. After your practitioner has given you the after care instructions, you can leave the clinic and carry on with your regular activities.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

You will experience some swelling in the area, which should be seen as a “good” side effect, as this tells you that the product is working and has effectively destroyed fat tissue!. The swelling lasts for at least 1 week and wearing some sort of compression garments is advised for the same period of time.

Bruising is another common side effect that has no medical relevance, but may cause a bit of concern in patients. Good news is that they don’t last forever, and they will be gone, without any further treatments, in a matter of days.

Some people may experience discomfort in the treated area, experiencing in most cases something similar to “muscle cramps”. Although symptoms are mild in most cases, if needed, they can be easily relieved with oral paracetamol.

WHEN WILL I NOTICE THE RESULTS?

Although most patients will see some improvement with just one session, an average of 3 sessions, 4 week apart will be needed to achieve the desired results.

Fat dissolving injections are not a “quick fix” for your stubborn fat pockets in your body, and it takes some time to see the results. But it definitely works!
