WHAT IS VENABLOCK?

Venablock represents the most recent innovation in the treatment of varicose veins. Developed and launched in Turkey in 2014, more than 300.000 patients have been successfully treated so far with Venablock and to date, no single case of severe allergic reaction has been reported.

With this treatment, a medical “SuperGlue” is introduced in the dilated varicose vein, normally the saphenous vein, under ultrasound guidance, and the veins are permanently sealed.

WHY VENABLOCK IS SUPERIOR TO OTHER METHODS?

The advantages of Venablock as a varicose vein treatment are multiple:

  • No need of hospitalisation or general anaesthetic. All the procedure takes place in an ambulatory setting. Faster recovery and no interference with your daily activities.
  • Quick procedure, that can be performed in 30 minutes from start to end.
  • No need of compression hosiery (if no concomitant procedures performed).
  • Unlike other energy-based procedures, such as endovenous laser (EVLT) or radiofrequency (RF) ablation, there is no risk of skin burns or nerve damage.

WHAT IS THE GLUE MADE OF?

The glue is made of a medically approved polymer called cyanoacrylate, which is similar to what is used for the common “SuperGlue”. However, this cyanocrilate has been modified and tested to make it safe to use in humans and it is approved for medical use.

Venablock is not the first glue developed to treat varicose veins, but it is definitely more effective and, above all, safe. After being used in more than 300.000 vein treatments worldwide, with 5-year results recently published, the incidence of side effects is minimal, and no single case of severe allergic reactions have been described, as it has been the case with other glues.

THE PROCEDURE

The entire procedure is done in an office-based setting, and therefore, no need for hospitalisation. Once you are prepped, and positioned, local anaesthesia is injected just at the injection site, and a catheter will be introduced into your vein under ultrasound guidance, which will be used during the entire duration of the procedure. Once the position of the catheter is carefully checked, it is withdrawn, and simultaneously, a small volume of glue is injected. Your leg will be compressed by the assistant, and the glue will solidify in a matter of minutes. Once the catheter is extracted, a new scan with ultrasound is performed to check the shutting of the vein, and the procedure terminates.

Unless any additional procedure is performed, there is no need to wear any compression stockings, and the patient leaves the office on his or her own, and can resume daily activities.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The day after the procedure, patients may feel a hard cord at the vein site, but this will eventually disappear and no foreign material is felt. Some discomfort may also be noted at the treated area, which is easily relieved with Paracetamol or Ibuprofen.

There is no need to wear any compression stockings (assuming no other procedures have been performed) , which represents a significant advantage as many patients find the stockings uncomfortable.

The treated vein will be transformed by the body to a non visible and non palpable fibrotic cord, in a process known as sclerosis.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THE BEST METHOD TO TREAT MY LEG VEINS?

There is no such “best method” as it will depend on the type of veins to be treated. For bulging, dilated, varicose veins, the best method will be Venablock (glue ablation of saphenous vein) combined with foam sclerotherapy (to treat the tributary veins draining into the “main pipeline”, aka saphenous vein. These treatments can be performed in an office setting, without the need of hospitalisation.
For thread veins, aka spider veins, microsclerotherapy is the treatment of choice,m which can be combined at times with laser or Thermavein treatment.

DOES SCLEROTHERAPY HURT?

Although this is an injectable treatment, it is delivered using a very small and thin needle, so in many cases you will only feel a tiny sharp prick, and sometimes, not even that. When the sclerosant solution is injected, you may feel a bit of a stingy sensation, but that’s all.

WILL MY VEINS DISAPPEAR IMMEDIATELY AS I’VE SEEN IN SOME VIDEOS?

Veins are seen because the blood flows within them, so when no blood is present, no vein is seen. In the videos you are mentioning, when the solution is injected, this removes the blood inside the vein and seems like the vein is miraculously gone. But what the videos don’t show is that after a few seconds, the blood will re enter the vein and the vein will be visible again. The irritating action of the sclerosant solution stays and then a process called sclerosis ensues, and this will eventually seal the vein.

DO I NEED TO WEAR COMPRESSION STOCKINGS AFTER THE TREATMENT?

Absolutely Yes!. Compression stockings are a critical part of the treatment of lower limb veins. With compression, the vein remains occluded and by doing so, the sclerosis process is facilitated (whether with laser or sclerosis). Compression stockings also prevent the blood from entering the vein and minimises the possibility of post treatment hyperpigmentation. And improves the overall blood flow in your legs. So for all these reasons, yes, compression stockings are definitely indicated if you want to achieve good results.

WHAT IS THE BEST TREATMENT FOR THREAD VEINS ON FACE?

Although several treatment options are available, without any doubt, the best treatment for thread veins and broken veins on the face is Thermavein. The reason is that Thermavein targets the vessel, not the blood (as is the case for lasers), so the results are seen immediately after the treatment, and in most cases, only 1 session is needed. And the best of it, it is pain free!
