DOUBLE CHIN TREATMENTS

Submental fat fullness, also known as double chin, represents an aesthetic problem in both younger and older male and female patients. It can occur regardless of weight, and it may also have a genetic determination in certain individuals. It is a major aesthetic concern because it is noticeable.

Until quite recently, the treatment of double chin was associated with surgery and invasive procedures, which are associated with the risks of anaesthesia, bleeding and infection. But the discovery of this capacity that deoxycholic acid has to destroy localised fat tissue and the experience accumulated has allowed that now this stubborn problem can be effectively treated without the need of surgery, and in a quick and safe way.

YOUR INITIAL CONSULTATION

First, you will have an initial consultation, where your practitioner will assess your face and, of course, your fat under the chin and double chin, and will explain to you the different options available, the pros and cons of the treatment, and, very importantly, what to expect from these treatments.
This is probably the most important step of the treatment, and the perfect moment to ask all your questions and concerns to your practitioner. Please remember that not all double chins are equal, and in some cases, there will be other potential factors contributing to the fat under the chin

THE PROCEDURE

As fat tissue barely has nerve endings, the procedure will be carried out in a painless manner, and, in most cases, without applying any topical ointment prior to it.
Your practitioner will place some marks in your neck and face to delineate the double chin area so the product will be precisely delivered to tackle this problem.

Depending on the product to be used, technique may differ:

• for Aqualyx you will feel just one prick as all the procedure is entirely done using 1 single injection point under your menton. Aqualyx is also mixed with lidocaine, a numbing agent, to minimise any possible pain
• for other brands, such as Celluform+, multiple injection sites will be used, but the nature of the solution injected will numb the area, making the procedure virtually pain free.

The entire treatment should not take more than 15 minutes. After your practitioner has given you the after care instructions, you can leave the clinic and carry on with your regular activities

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Immediately after the procedure, you may feel some tightness in the fat under the chin, and the area may be numbed. Some people will see a swelling of the treated area (mainly with Aqualyx) and very few may experience some discomfort at the lower teeth/jaw level. All these symptoms are completely normal.
Swelling of the double chin will be, by far, the most common symptom. Don’t worry, it should be seen as a “good” side effect, as this tells you that the product is working and has effectively destroyed fat tissue!. In fact we need this swelling (the inflammatory process that occurs after the tissue has been destroyed) to achieve results. So nothing needs to be done about it.

Bruising is another common side effect, but with no consequences at all. Makeup and foundation can be used to conceal it, and they will be gone in a matter of days. Some may experience a bit of discomfort, which can be easily relieved by oral paracetamol.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Most people will see some improvement with just one session, but it takes up to 6 weeks to notice it. However, the treatment normally needs 2 to 3 sessions, 6 weeks apart. So this is not a quick fix for your fat under chin or “double chin”. But it definitely works
